Son dominates with two goals, an assist in 3-1 win over Leicester
2022-05-11
LONDON — Son Heung-min pulled off a tour de force to lead Tottenham Hotspur to a 3-1 win over Leicester City on Sunday, scoring two goals and assisting the other at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

It was the return of the Son and Harry Kane show for the Premier League fixture, with Spurs’ dynamic duo behind all three of the goals despite an otherwise fairly lackluster performance from the London squad.

Kane’s goal came first in the 20th minute, a Son corner caught on the head at the near post, exactly as they drew it up on the training ground.

Son’s chances came in the second half, when Dejan Kulusevski came on for Lucas Moura.

The Swedish footballer and Son have seen an increasingly prolific partnership grow between the two since Kulusevski joined Spurs in January, and Sunday’s game was no exception.

Goal No. 1 for Son came in the 60th minute when a well-timed tackle from Cristian Romero landed at the feet of Kulusevski, who ran the ball into the box and passed to Son. The Korean international allowed the ball to go past him before turning on the spot and sending it across the goal and into the right corner.

But while his first goal showed some beautiful control, the second was a work of art. Kulusevski again was the one to set it up, passing to Son from the right win to put him in space just outside the far-right corner of the box.

After taking a couple of touches, Son fired a screamer across the box into the top left corner, easily beating Kasper Schmeichel with his left foot for one of his best goals of the season.

Leicester got one back in injury time, but the damage was well and truly done. Despite having only 39 percent of the possession, a few electric moments from Son and the attacking line gave Spurs a decisive win.

The two goals take Son to a total of four Premier League goals so far this season, a new personal best in his seventh season in the league.

Son’s previous best was 17 goals scored last season, which in turn was a big step up from the 14 goals in the 2016-17 season. With four games still left to play this season, Son could extend that record even further.

Those 19 goals are also enough to see Son comfortably take second place in the Premier League top scorer ranking, behind Liverpool’s Mo Salah on 22, and ahead of Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo on 17. If penalties are excluded, Son actually leads the league.

Sunday’s win keeps Spurs solidly in the race for a top four finish this season, although Arsenal also won their game against West Ham 2-1, so Tottenham remain in fifth place.

With only the top four teams qualifying for the Champions League each season, finishing within the top four is crucial for the Premier League’s top clubs. Tottenham are currently two points behind Arsenal in fifth place, but it’s all to play for with four games left.

Spurs face a serious challenge next week as they take on Liverpool at Anfield, before facing Arsenal in a crucial North London derby on May 12.
